Five suspected militants and one policeman were killed during a special anti-terrorism operation Saturday morning in the North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, Russian state media said.
At least 12 people were killed Saturday in an earthquake in Russia's Chechnya region, Russian news agencies reported.
A day after more than 100 militants attacked city buildings and took hostages in the southern Russian city of Nalchik, sparking bloody clashes with police, an area official declared Friday the resistance had been suppressed and all hostages freed, according to the Interfax news agency.
Police largely repelled an attack by 80 to 100 militants in the southern Russian region of Kabardino-Balkariya, a Russian official, told the Interfax news agency. He said 12 militants were detained and 20 killed.
