What's the first thing you think of when you think of Hawaii? The foaming-white sea lapping at a golden-sand beach surrounded by palm trees swaying in the breeze? Well, sure -- Hawaii's one of the world's ultimate beach destinations, an island paradise made for basking in the sun sipping daiquiris or hitting the waves to surf some righteous tubes.

NEW YORK -- Each time Kemba Walker stepped to the free-throw line during the first half of Wednesday's Big East tournament game against Georgetown, a pocket of red-clad St. John's students behind the basket greeted him with the taunt "Hardy's better." "So strange," Tweets the heiress, who was headed to Maui with her boyfriend
Duke and Michigan State will meet at Cameron Indoor Stadium tonight in the final game of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. The contest lost a bit of luster after Michigan State fell to Connecticut in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational, which dropped the Spartans from No. 2 to No. 6 in the AP poll, but it is still a huge event and potential Final Four preview. Here are five key questions entering the game, plus my prediction.
Because he was in such demand by the media, Kemba Walker was the last man to board the UConn bus following the Huskies' 84-67 win over Kentucky in the championship game of last week's Maui Invitational. Walker scored 90 points in the Huskies' three wins, which included a semifinal upset of then-No. 2 Michigan State, making him the easy choice for tournament MVP. But for all the cheers he heard inside the Lahaina Civic Center, the best ovation was yet to come.
There's a movement afoot -- by tourism-minded folks in Kansas City -- to brand Kansas City as the college basketball capital of America. This may be difficult to achieve, given that the city doesn't have a venue capable of hosting the Final Four. What it does have, at least this year, is the No. 1 event in SI.com's rankings of early season tournaments. So perhaps Kansas City can start with just calling itself "The College Basketball Capital of America (for two days in late November, 2010)," and go from there.
Last season, after I ranked the most difficult nonconference schedules, the teams at Nos. 1 and 3 (North Carolina and Texas) imploded, while the teams at Nos. 2, 6 and 7 (Michigan State, Duke and West Virginia) made the Final Four. The lesson, I suppose, is that a tough schedule is a good and vital thing -- but only if you have the right personnel to endure it.

On a week when we can be thankful that ESPN networks are televising more than 50 hours of college basketball, let us consider the way this came about. In January 2006, the NCAA made two moves that it knew would precipitate a boom in the number of early-season tournaments, or "multi-team events," on the November-December landscape. It repealed the "two-in-four" rule that kept teams from playing in multi-team events more than twice in any four-year span, and, in a less-publicized rule change, eliminated the events' certification process, which had required operators to provide detailed financial information to the NCAA and have the school or conference sponsoring the event be responsible for selecting the field.
Here is the current list of the 2009 preseason basketball tournaments. It will be updated as information becomes available.
1. Alabama-Auburn In the magazine I've described Duke and North Carolina in basketball as "the one rivalry all other rivalries secretly wish to be." But I don't stand by that comment quite as stoutly as I would if I'd seen the Tigers play the Tide, a feud I've been curious about ever since spotting my first AVOID THE RUSH -- HATE AUBURN EARLY bumper sticker.

When the NCAA passed legislation in 2006 that repealed the "two-in-four" rule -- which had limited college basketball teams to playing in only two exempt, early season tournaments over a four-year span -- the biggest casualty was the value of the word "classic." The legislation opened the floodgates on what the colorful wordsmiths behind the NCAA Division I manual call "Multiple-Team Events," which provide teams with an exemption to sneak in two extra regular-season games, upping the max allowed from 29 to 31. Thus there are 50 of of these tournaments scheduled for 2008-09, and no fewer than 28 of them have "classic" in their title.

From butterflies to grizzly bears, we know where the wild things are.
The 15-foot pepper tree in front of my house collapsed yesterday, uprooted by a massive winter storm, and came crashing down against a utility pole. Today my wife is dealing with the fire department, a puddle in the basement, an arborist, our 1-year-old son, another round of storms, and a hound dog that refuses to poop in the rain. Twenty-five hundred miles away, I'm lying face-down in a thatch hut at the Four Seasons resort along Maui's Wailea beach. Two native Hawaiian women ply their forearms on my backside in a ceremonial Lomi Lomi massage, working the knotted muscles above my shoulder blades and along my spine. "E ho mai ka 'ike mai luna mai e," they chant rhythmically, calling on the spirits for wisdom and to help coerce toxins from my system. Just outside the door, children run barefoot at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Handsome sunbathers flip through Michael Crichton novels before nodding off under sailcloth cabanas. Humpback whales breach at the horizon.

The Coast Guard helped clear protesters who briefly disrupted the second voyage of Hawaii's first-ever passenger ferry service among the Hawaiian islands, but the fight over the ship's environmental impact is far from over.
