Some might think the Hockey Gods owed one to the Nashville Predators for handling the Alexander Radulov/Andrei Kostitsyn imbroglio "the right way."
Regular season series: Predators win 3-1
Almost everyone, including yours truly, said that this would be a close series. On many levels it has been: three one-goal games, with Game 4 last Tuesday in Detroit ending 3-1 Nashville after starting with 40 scoreless minutes. Yet, the series tally isn't close, as the Predators hold a commanding 3-1 lead.
The wildfire raging near Austin, Texas, has destroyed nearly 1,400 homes and has "potential for growth," a fire official said Thursday.
Volunteers from around central Texas joined together to rescue hundreds of animals from the fires in Bastrop.
Somebody cue the Alec Baldwin, "You guys think you're closers?"scene from "Glengarry Glen Ross." Somebody show the Vancouver Canucks the part when Shelley "The Machine" Levene is told to "Put that coffee down -- coffee is for closers only" by Baldwin.
1. Joel Ward, Predators -- A no-brainer here. The rugged Nashville forward, who had already been starting to stand out in these playoffs entering Game 5 of the Predators' Western semifinal series with Vancouver, was the hero in their 4-3 win. Ward scored two third-period goals and assisted on another earlier Preds marker to give him 12 points in these playoffs. That's nearly halfway to the 29 he posted in 80 regular-season games.
1. Brandon Dubinsky, Rangers -- Yes, it was something of a Texas Leaguer, the goal that proved the game-winner for the New York Rangers Sunday -- a popup that fell in behind Washington goalie Michal Neuvirth. But it's funny, isn't it, how the hardest-working players seem to get all the luck? For Dubinsky, the kind of effort he put forth for New York in Game 3 made him a worthy candidate for a fortunate goal. In 25:45 of ice time for New York, he had the goal plus an assist, and a game-high seven hits.

The Senators have the Sabres in a 2-0 hole heading into their home portion of the series due to several factors. The obvious is the production from the top line trio of Dany Heatley -- Jason Spezza -- Daniel Alfredsson. Maybe more apparent has been the Senators' dominance on special teams scoring five times -- once shorthanded -- while the Sabres have flailed in futility on both power-play and shorthanded situations.
The Ottawa Senators are like your troubled teenagers who are heading off to college. You never thought they'd make it, but they have. This doesn't mean they'll land the big job or even figure out how to do their own laundry. Getting through the next phase of life (or next round of the playoffs) will be another challenge, but it is time to forget about past transgressions and failures and pat them on the back for graduating and moving on.
