Fortune: Where business is boomingupdated: Tue Nov 04 2008 05:10:00

Cold, landlocked, and boasting as its largest metropolis the city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan may not be top of mind for most Americans. But the Canadian province is one of the richest spots in the world when it comes to natural resources. It's the world's largest producer of uranium. It's the biggest producer of the fertilizer potash (current price: $1,000 a ton, up from $300 this time last year). It is the world's largest exporter of green lentils and chickpeas. And it's home to enormous supplies of oil and gas: The U.S. buys more oil from Saskatchewan than it does from Kuwait. No wonder the CEO of one Fortune 500 company - Jim Prokopanko of Mosaic, which has a potash mine near the town of Esterhazy - describes the prairie province as "the next sovereign wealth fund."

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Scott Niedermayer had victoriously skated around with the Stanley Cup before. Three times to be exact. Each time he had won it, he took it back to his home in Cranbrook, British Columbia, where he would gather with friends and family for a barbeque. At sunset, they would sit around a campfire with the Cup and point out certain names etched into the silver chalice and tell stories. Everyone would get to hold the trophy and tell a tale. Well, everyone except one.

I spent most of the day in front of the tube on Sunday, but there was no Super Bowl for your faithful scribe. While every other guy in North America was pounding beers and chicken wings and rating the commercials, I was poring over two-week-old game film of 16-year-old hockey phenom John Tavares.

DALLAS -- After sitting through the NHL's third-ever YoungStars game Tuesday night, I can only say I hope it is the last. But this game, dull and miscast, is no way to get it going.
