The media spotlight might have shone most intensely on Jena, Louisiana, but a symbol of racial violence has been hung across America lately, spurring anger, resentment and a big question.
I've been, over the years, because of our reporting on controversial issues and my strongly held beliefs on those issues, attacked, and usually pretty vigorously, by both the left wing and the right wing of this nation's media, both mainstream and otherwise, and of course the politicians that form the extremes of our political spectrum.
George W. Bush's insistence on a new guest-worker program as part of any immigration reform has infuriated many conservatives, but it is also sounding alarm bells among some immigrant-rights advocates. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) argues that many guest workers already in the U.S. are being cruelly exploited--sometimes in government jobs--and fears that any expansion will lead to more instances of what Mary Bauer, an SPLC lawyer, calls "indentured servitude."
Wolves run in packs. They hunt that way. They live that way. The lone wolf is the exception. When it comes to the world of domestic terrorism that might not be the case.
